How to Act in an Emergency

How to Behave in a Rockets or Mortar Attack

Correct behavior in the face of daily threats saves lives!

Table of contents
The Danger

This is the most dominant threat to the Israeli home front in the last number of years. Several Qassam rockets are launched almost daily towards the southern part of the country, specifically the western Negev, damaging property and injuring residents. The rockets pose a danger to people outside protected areas by a direct hit, such as shock wave damage (from the explosives) or by shrapnel (that breaks apart on impact and becomes dangerous itself).

How to Prepare

Given the short alert span, it is important to designate the place to enter in the case of rocket fire well ahead of time. Your first choice is the Residential Secure Space (MAMAD) or private shelter. In the absence of a MAMAD or a private shelter, choose a secure space according to the directions of the Home Front Command. Make sure that all family members know the secure space or room. It is important to designate such a room in every location you are likely to find yourself. Make sure to equip the secure space or room with your   emergency bag and to undertake family preparations .

How to Identify a Rocket Attack

The sounding of the siren, a loud boom, or “color red” alert. The alert span is at most 15 seconds.

How to Behave during an Attack

Inside a structure:

  • Enter the Residential Secure Space (MAMAD) immediately and close the steel window.
  • In a structure without a MAMAD, do the following in order:

1.       Enter the room that is farthest from the direction of the expected rocket fire. It should have a minimum of external walls, windows, and openings.

2.       Close the door and windows in the room.

3.       Sit on the floor (below the height of the windows in the room) next to an interior wall, but not across from a window.

4.       Residents of the upper floor of a building without a MAMAD must go into the stairwell and descend one flight of stairs.

The secure space can be a stairwell or hallway (provided these match the above description better than any other room in the home).

Outside a structure:

·         In a built-up area, enter a building and follow directions given those already inside.

·         In an open area, lie down and protect your head with your hands.

In a vehicle:

·         Carefully stop your vehicle on the shoulder, exit, and enter a near-by structure or shelter.

·         In an open area, lie down and cover your head wit your hands.

After the event:

It is possible to leave the protected area after 5 minutes, unless otherwise instructed.

Stay away from unidentified objects. In case you see a rocket on the ground, keep people away from it, and inform the security forces.
