Whom Do We Inform?

Introduction

Past experience teaches that any person who suddenly finds himself in the midst of an emergency benefits from early intervention by the relevant emergency response team or by an individual who is him/herself not in the same danger. Why is this the case?

  1. Time during an emergency is critical. The sooner medical personnel arrive, the wounded is better off; the sooner a fire truck arrives, the fire is put out faster…
  2. Rescue personnel can give directions from afar. Emergencies can always surprise you with an unexpected scenario. In the field of emergency response, births by phone and psychological counseling over a megaphone have happened. It should be stressed that, even so, it is best to prepare for known scenarios and not to rely solely on rescue services.
  3. The progress of the emergency can never be foretold. We don’t know if, in another minute, we’ll even be able to call to report a fire, or how to control the deterioration of a wounded person’s condition, etc.

During the family talk:
    • Make sure that all family members know the list of contacts you have prepared as part of preparing the home and where to find it.
    • It is important to teach the children whom to call and when (102=fire department; 101=human casualties; 100=emergency and crime).
    • Try to explain to them the important information to report on the phone (what is happening in the home, the location of the home – particularly in case of fire or collapse, who else is at home and their condition).
    • It is very important to explain to children that the call will result in necessary, life-saving actions.
    • Make sure to designate a contact person through whom, in case communication between family members is lost, it will be possible for family members to make contact and leave messages.

Installing a home phone in your secure space or room is imperative!

Means of Communication in an Emergency

While preparing the home, it is very important to put ways of communicating in an emergency in one place. Write down in a prominent spot that all family members know:

    • Important phone numbers of emergency organizations, the local authorities and other relevant institutions in your neighborhood.
    • Ways of communicating to family members in case of urgent need to make contact. It is not recommended to rely on human memory or even on the memory chip of your cellular device.
    • Determine which neighbors, family members or other acquaintances should be contacted in case you cannot make contact with your family members. Whenever possible, note information that may prove useful (a relative who is also a medic or a doctor, a neighbor who is also a plumber, an acquaintance who is also an electrician, etc.). It is very important to let emergency contacts know that you have given their phone numbers to your children. Suggest that they do the same with theirs. Generally speaking, it is very important that neighbors cooperate and extend mutual aid. Try to encourage a conversation about joint preparations in addition to the preparations of each family in its own home. Try to overcome differences between families, to undertake certain portions of the emergency plans together, etc. Think together if, as a family, you can help needy people in your neighborhood (those living alone, the elderly, shut-ins, the sick, etc.).
