When Are We Doing This Again?

Experience teaches us that the human memory span is short, particularly concerning topics that are out of the ordinary, and even shorter concerning topics that we try to repress. Possible emergencies and threats against any given location change from time to time. The composition of the household and the ages of family members also changes.

After you have completed preparing the family, the home, and the supplies, maintain the high state of awareness you have reached.

At the end of the family talk, determine the next time you will meet to reexamine the plan (have tasks been added? does one of our acquaintances have a new phone number?), refresh its components (from the bottled water to the batteries of the emergency lighting), and practice the family emergency plan. You may use the periodic family meeting to make sure that everyone who has a task is doing it routinely (such as securing objects or refreshing equipment).

Conclude the talk when you are sure that all family members know what to do in any given situation, whom they need to contact, and what special tasks they have in the common plan. Invite family members to come to you with any question they might have later. It is important to note that repeated practice entails simple steps. Do not be lazy about actions that can save your children’s lives as well as your own. Remember the sense of familial responsibility and parental mission that motivated you to start to plan in the first place.

Good luck.
