How to Behave in the Event of a Hazardous Material

Thorough compliance with regulations saves lives and minimizes damage

Hazardous materials are found everywhere around the country. They are used in industry, refrigeration, marketing, research and so on. Hazardous materials are defined as any material which may be harmful to human life and health, as a result of inhalation of vapors, ingestion, contact with skin or eyes, explosion, radiation and heat, or any material defined as such by law.

The Danger:

Damage to hazardous materials caches can severely impact lives and property. Such damage results in dispersal of the material in gas or aerosol form. Atmospheric spread of such materials constitutes a threat to anyone who comes into direct contact with the material. Furthermore, even the presence in the affected area is dangerous since the materials may react with one another or with any object or person they encounter (causing burns and damage resulting from fires or explosions).
Formation of aerosol clouds in populated areas can also cause mass poisoning, pollution of water sources by poisonous material infiltration, damage to purification facilities due to poisonous materials penetrating the sewage system, and paralysis of the microbiological system for sewage purification.

Preparations in advance:

it is important to establish in advance where you are going to take shelter during a rocket attack. As the first priority, choose a MAMAD (apartment protected space) or a private bomb shelter, if it is located inside the building and does not require going outdoors. If no MAMAD or private shelter are available, choose a protected room which complies with the Home Front Command guidelines. Make sure all member of the household are familiar with your chosen protected space. It is important to select a protected space at any location we spend time in. In an event involving hazardous materials leak, the preparation of the protected space according to the guidelines is even more important. Equip the protected space with an emergency bag and perform family preparations.
Furthermore, residents of the following towns are in the possession of Lugol tablets: Abu-Jawiad, Abu-Karinat, A’azam, Janabib, Dimona, Hawashla, Yeruham, Neot-Hakikar, Neve-Zohar, Nasasra, Idan, Ein-Hatzeva, Ein-Tamar, Ir-Ubot, Ar’ara b’Negev, Kabiah and Karsar A-Sir. Residents of these towns are requested to store the tablets in accordance with the instructions on the package (similar to prescription medication storage) and accessible to all members of the household.
It is recommended to conduct a family talk to make sure that all the members of the household are familiar with the tablets, know where they are and how to use them in accordance with the instructions. Areas of distribution have been determined by professionals, following threat assessments and examination of the most severe scenarios possible.
All other residents of Israel are not required to have Lugol tablets at their homes.

How to identify an event?

When you hear an alert siren or receive express instructions via the media or on this website.

How to behave during an event?
  • Immediately close all external doors and windows.
  • Close and turn off stoves (heating and cooking), air conditioners (do not operate window or central air units; only split air conditioning units can be used), all ventilation openings, gas and water faucets.
  • Enter the protected space or room determined in advance. Close all doors and windows and if possible, all other openings. It is recommended not to heat the room; lighting of fire or smoking in the protected space is absolutely forbidden. Pet can be brought into the protected space.
  • If you are outdoors, enter the nearest closed space (public buildings etc.)
  • If you are traveling, close all doors, windows and openings in the vehicle (including air conditioning vents) and leave the area, driving safely and only by the routes specified by the Home Front Command in radio broadcasts.

Should any symptoms of exposure to hazardous materials appear (such as nausea, headache, shortness of breath, skin burns or irritation of eyes and nasal cavity), wash the affected organ with water to dilute and wash away the hazardous material, and call an ambulance (101 Magen David Adom).
Lugol tablets, even when at your disposal, should be taken only with express instructions by the Home Front Command given through the media!
Listen and act according to the instructions broadcast in the media. The instructions will be updated in accordance with the types of hazardous materials identified and other variables.
Leave the protected space only upon express instructions by the Home Front Command given through the media.

Remember!!!
Unnecessary arrival to the area of the incident endangers lives and hinders the activities of the security and rescue personnel operating in the area.
